Youth Councillors from E:merge, a youth charity based in Bradford, met together for a day with Desmond Henry, Rashid Khan, Damon Scully, three stars of the award winning documentary ‘Make Bradford British’.
Part of the day was spent considering what makes someone British; with all participants completing the 2014 citizenship test with varying results ensuing.
The youth councillors had the opportunity to ask the television trio more about the MBB show itself, what it was like and the response they have had since.
They learned more about themselves as a community of E:merge in Bradford and the possible impact they can make in that community.
Messages about the importance of dispelling myths about young people, breaking down barriers of prejudice and ignorance, accepting people for who they are once you get to know them, and not believing everything you hear in the media about a certain type of person, were all reinforced throughout the day.
Feedback from all at the end of the event was positive, with the desire to repeat the day with more young people from different parts of the city and the youth councillors taking more of a leadership role.
“It was inspiring to meet Desmond, Rashid and Damon- to hear about how their shared experience on the TV programme MBB brought people who wouldn’t normally meet together, E:merge youth worker, Emma Bonfield said.
“We want to be able to learn from them and celebrate the difference of each person who comes to E:merge.”
