A brave fundraiser from Huddersfield took to the skies last weekend as he conquered his fear of heights, embarking on a 15,000ft plunge for charity.
39-year-old Satnam Singh decided to undertake the fundraising mission of parachuting out of a plane in hope of raising money for Kirkwood Hospice.
The local charity had cared for the father-of-two’s aunt during her final days and Satnam said he had wanted to give something back to a ‘very worthwhile cause’.
So, after his initial ‘jump-date’ was postponed at the start of the month, the fundraiser headed out for his skydive on Sunday 9th November, to finally undertake the daredevil drop.
After spending more than four hours on the ground, watching fellow fundraisers take the leap of faith, it was finally time for Satnam to fulfil his jump after a short briefing.
“I was obviously a bit nervous at first but after seeing other people do the skydive it helped reassure me that everything was going to be fine,” he said.
“I remember glancing over the edge before the drop and the instructor told me to just put my hands on the harness and then we were off.
“It was actually very exciting and once we were off, I really enjoyed it.”
He added: “It was a really clear day as well, so when I was on my way down the scenery was incredible. I could see the Humber Bridge and River Humber, even if they did look tiny from the sky.”
In total, Satnam raised more than £3,000 through fundraising, with a large contribution from his work, the Marsh-based Mann and Associates.
With donations still coming in, the local consultant added that he would like to see people follow in his footsteps and help raise vital funds for the charity, in any way they can.
“This was a great experience for me and hopefully it will inspire other people to do similar initiatives as well in the future,” he added.
“Thank you to everyone who helped me pass the £3,000 mark, it is really appreciated and I will be keeping my feet on the ground now until Christmas.”
Kirkwood Hospice fundraiser Dawn Walker also thanked Satnam for his fundraising efforts which are vital in helping to fund the hopsice’s day-to-day running costs.
She said: “We really appreciate Satnam getting behind our Make a Difference Day campaign.
“He has raised a fantastic amount for the Hospice already and is still fundraising. The fact that he is facing his biggest fear makes his efforts even more special.
“Without the wonderful support of people like Satnam, we simply couldn’t continue to provide our services for the people of Kirklees.”
