London based music producer Sunny-G has teamed up Parineeta Narula to create a beautiful yet haunting version of the Punjabi classic track ‘Akhiyan’.
Parineeta is the niece of the popular Punjabi singer Jaspinder Narula who produced the original version of the song many years ago.
Akhiyan is releasing on the birthday of the late Surinder Kaur – a world-famous Punjabi singer-songwriter, who was the voice behind the original track. Sunny-G says: “It’s our little tribute to Surinder Kaur. She was an amazing artist and loved by millions across the world. Her music will live on forever and we just wanted to do something special for her.”
Akhiyan will be available as a free download for a simple reason: “It’s a no-brainer, says Sunny-G. “It has to be a free download because trying to make money from a tribute track would be so wrong!
Sunny-G, who has a degree in music from the London College of Music, also brought in Flo Studios as part of this joint venture. Mahi Sarna, the model featured in the video has also played roles in a number of films including Gippy Grewal’s ‘Mirza’. She’s also modelled for some top names including Italian Vogue and Ray Bans!
Surinder sang mainly Punjabi folk songs, where she is credited for pioneering and popularising the genre and later was known as the ‘Nightingale of Punjab’. Her illustrious career spanned almost six decades, her repertoire included Punjabi Sufi Kafis of Bulleh Shah and verses by contemporary poets. In time her wedding songs, most notably ‘Lathe Di Chadar’, ‘Suhe Ve Cheere Waleya’ and ‘Kaala Doria’, became an indelible part of Punjabi culture.
