Finding the leaders of tomorrow, today
The Accredited Junior Fellowship Programme (JFP) is a personal development training programme offered to young people who are currently in Year 10 at their school.
It has been successfully running in Leeds since 2003 and is designed to develop confident, articulate and responsible citizens who have the academic abilities and personal skills that employers are looking for.
The five key aims of the programme are to:
- improve projected GCSE grades
- encourage students to continue their education post-16
- equip students to make informed Higher Education and career choices
- develop personal skills and effectiveness
- encourage civic knowledge and contribution
Through seminars and workshops the fellows work on their social and interpersonal skills such as presentation, team working, organisational, project management, time management etc. They also work towards the ‘Certificate of Personal Effectiveness’ (CoPE) at Level 2 which, when successfully moderated equates to a GCSE Grade B.
Successful completion of the programme demonstrates to future employers that the fellows have the commitment, drive and dedication to work towards an accredited course that enhances their CV outside of their school environment.
Furthermore, every fellow is required to do a significant amount of work independently which prepares them for Further and Higher Education as they begin to familiarise themselves with the concept of independent learning from an early age.
- How does the programme work?
Students are recruited at the beginning of Year 10. They must have a minimum of level 5 in their Year 9 assessments in English, Mathematics and Science. During the two years leading up to GCSE examinations, fellows receive training from a Programme Leader who is supported by Undergraduate Student Ambassadors. In addition, qualified guest teachers are invited to deliver the academic support.
Fellows take part in a co-ordinated range of activities including:
- One-day seminars held at Leeds Beckett University
- University visit/s for a preview of different university environments
- An outdoor residential at the end of the programme
- Graduation Ceremony following GCSE results.
All stationary is provided including the portfolios for the CoPE accreditation.
- How are the seminars held?
Seminars are held on a Saturday and on average once a month in line with the academic calendar.
All the seminars are held at Leeds Beckett University, Headingley Campus. Leeds, LS6 3QS, 10:00am – 3:30pm.
- How is the programme accredited and who by?
The Junior Fellowship Programme is accredited by ASDAN.
ASDAN is an awarding body that offers a range of qualifications approved by the regulatory authorities for England (QCA) and the Secretary of State under Section 96 and 97 of the Learning Skills Act, for pre and posts 16 provisions.
Fellows have the opportunity to work towards ASDAN’s Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE) at Level 2. For further information please log onto; www.asdan.org.uk/cope.php
