A lot has changed in Leeds over the past 25 years, from the landscape of the city to the opening and closing of hundreds of businesses.
One takeaway, however, has remained a bastion in the fast food landscape and today Shahjahan, continues to serve up the most flavoursome chicken and chips in the region.
Established in 1987, the Roundhay Road establishment has built its reputation on the classic southern fried dish, frying up tender pieces of chicken for its huge customer base.
Crispy thighs, succulent legs and spicy wings, all delicious to tear off the bone, provide diners with mouth-watering meals for a quick snack or evening meal.
Yakub Sidad is the owner of Shahjahan and has witnessed takeaways come and go on Roundhay Road.
Explaining why his business has achieved such longevity, he said: “When people think of Shahjahan they think of our chicken and chips.
“It sounds like a simple meal but there is an art to perfecting it and we believe we have mastered it. That is why we have remained a busy takeaway all these years, whilst others have appeared and disappeared just as fast.”
At Shahjahan, all chicken is provided from the world-famous Southern Fried Chicken brand – established in the UK back in the 1970s. Add to it a little sprinkle of secret spices and the chicken and chips is a sure fire winner and an irresistible dinner.
Nadim Hanif, partner at the Asian Express Newspaper, has been a customer at the establishment for several years and says it is clear why people cannot get enough of the meals.
“Shahjahan is unlike any other takeaway,” he said. “The chicken is always cooked to perfection and when served with their mint sauce, it really is a meal that stands out from anywhere else in Leeds.
“It is clear to see why they have succeeded in an industry where so many others fail.”
As well as the scrumptious chicken and chips, Shahjahan also serve up other takeaway favourites, including the finest cuts of Istanbul Donner Kebabs.
With their 30th year anniversary fast approaching, Shahjahan show no signs of slowing down any time soon. Call in and see for yourself why they are considered the flavourite chicken and chips shop in the city.
