Call in for a frozen treat at Queens Qulfi on Thornton Road and you won’t see a scoop in sight.
Smiling behind two large ice pans (smoking away at a cool minus 35 degrees) are the friendly faces of Jimmy, Saffy, Shaba and Was: four brothers who are putting kooky curls into your ice cream.
Here, ice cream is melted down and gloriously poured onto an ice cold plate. It’s then smoothed out, whilst at the same time being chopped and stirred while crystallizing, until creamy.
“The concoction is then flattened, rolled, squished into a cup, and topped with sweets, squirty cream or fresh fruit,” Jimmy said.
Behind the counter are bottles upon bottles of the world famous syrup brand ‘Monin’, so customers can jazz up their ice cream roll with irresistible flavours like Strawberry, Kiwi, Mojito Mint, Pina Colada, Chocolate Cookie, Coconut, Pistachio and Pineapple, to name but a few.
Saffy added: “There are millions of different taste combinations. Probably unlimited if you mix them all up. You can also add extra toppings like Oreos, Chocolate digestives and even Nutella.”
Jimmy then starts pouring still and fizzy mango juice into a cup. He looks like a mad scientist, deep in thought as he conjures up a hypothesis for the world’s finest drink, yet unknown to humankind. Until now…
“We call these the ‘Ice Blasts’, they’re like an ice pan slush. Kids can’t get enough of them.”
In a puff of smoke (or dry ice) the drink sits before our eyes in a mountain of glistening orange ice. If The Simpsons had discovered Queens Qulfi, Apu would have sold these in the Kwik-E-Mart, instead of squishees. Bart would say ‘Cowabunga!’
Also on sale is homemade cookie dough, made with truly luxurious ingredients, including butter which is made from massaged cows (Jimmy showed us, it’s true).
So for the best Kufli, incredible ice pan rolled ice cream and four cheeky brothers who are blessed with the best personalities in Bradford, head on down to Queens Qulfi now!
