The British show The Broken News was a comedy, developed by Mike Bartlett for the BBC over a decade ago. Vinay Waikul’s Indian show only borrows the name and is actually based on another TV show called Press. The show is about the battle for TRPs and stories between two rival news channels and their editors.
The Broken News is about the battle between Awaaz Bharti, headed by Amina Qureshi (Sonali Bendre) and Deepankar Sanyal (Jaideep).
Where Amina’s news channels focusses on the truth, Deepankar’s news channels puts emphasis on gossip.
The story follows the war between the two channels and their journalists as they try to unravel a big conspiracy brewing.
ZEE5’s new show does not shy away from using real names of people and places. You get names like IIMC and Dawood Ibrahim. It’s realistic and makes it more authentic. But the real bold move is making reference to relevant present-day happenings from the real world and weaving them into the narrative.
This is Sonali Bendre’s comeback since her cancer battle four years ago. On top of that, it’s her OTT debut.
Sonali seems to be natural as Amina Qureshi, the committed editor of Awaaz Bharti and lends some much-needed maturity to the role. However Jaideep Ahlawat is the true hero of the series; he oozes confidence in every frame.
An interesting watch.
