The Lion Gym and Boxing Club is set to host two Yorkshire Challenge belts Championships at Bradford Hotel on Saturday 4th February 2023.
The Lion Gym in Greengates, a registered charity in Bradford, has been a roaring success ever since it opened its doors in 2016.
The gym was established by senior boxing coach Khalil Alam, who has worked without end to serve the community on a volunteer basis alongside full time employment and family commitments.
Khalil comments: “I previously volunteered as youth worker and school boxing coach for a number of years and seen first-hand the struggles many young people face.
“So, I took it upon myself to help the community by establishing a fitness/boxing gym to help people keep occupied.
“It helps in getting young people off the streets where boredom and no sense of belonging can often lead to crime and drugs. The Lion Gym keeps the young people and adults engaged in a positive health and sport activity.
“Our members keep engaged with the club on a long term basis and get the opportunity to keep fit in the gym. They can participate in a range of keep-fit classes (including boxing) and can also box competitively as amateur boxers since we do a number of our own home boxing shows to keep them occupied, interested and continuously developing.”
On Saturday 4th February 2023 The Lion Gym and Boxing Club will be hosting two Yorkshire Challenge Belt Championship bouts.
The highly regarded Yorkshire Challenge Belt will feature one of the Lion Gym’s finest boxers 21 year old Jamie Broom who has had an impressive amateur boxing record of seven wins and one controversial loss on his record.
The Yorkshire Challenge Belt is a prestigious amateur boxing title in a specific weight category and when won means the holder is the best in Yorkshire at his particular weight category.
It will be the first time a Lion Gym’s boxer is challenging for such a title and head coach Khalil Alam is really excited about taking on the challenge and the event itself.
Khalil adds: “We as a club, and Jamie as a boxer, have a very tough challenge facing us against an opponent who is more experienced than Jamie. But knowing all of my competitive boxers (who will be boxing on the show) they are ‘lions’ in their nature, and perform even better when the odds of winning are against them.
“This is the first Yorkshire title challenge for team Lion Gym and we are confident we can display a winning performance.
“However whatever the outcome for the two separate Yorkshire belt championships and 16 amateur bouts, the event itself will be a winner for Bradford and everyone involved.”
The event is sponsored by world famous Bradford Council, Regal Bakery, Square Apple Takeaway, Newlands Community Transport and Carr & Co Solicitors Huddersfield.
Tickets for the boxing show will be available on the door at the day of the event at Bradford Hotel.
