Birmingham Museums is presenting a range of activities and events in celebration of South Asian Heritage Month.
Held annually from July 18 to August 17, the month is a period to honour, recognise, and appreciate South Asian history and culture, as well as to comprehend the rich cultural legacy of countries in South Asia. Visitors are invited to come together through food, dance, music and art in the museum’s inclusive and welcoming spaces.
Artist and British-Indian dancer Shreya Vadnerkar from Akademi, is showcasing her exciting, upbeat dance workshops where you can gain insight into the intricacy of Indian classical dance and let loose with some energetic Bollywood.
Shreya specialises in Bharatanatyam and Bollywood dance as well as having trained Folk, Tap, Modern and a newfound passion for Breaking (Breakdance) over the years.
The workshops are free to attend, and open to all ages and abilities focusing on beginner’s level.
Akademi is a dynamic and future facing organisation, with a vision that South Asian dance is a vital part of everyone’s creative expression. Founded in 1979 Akademi is the beating heart of South Asian dance in the UK, creating captivating and profound artistic experiences that inspire connection, joy, and hope.
With years of training, Shreya regularly performs Bharatanatyam and Bollywood around the country and competes in Breaking battles nationally. Some of her recent achievements include featuring in the Marvel Eternals film as a Bollywood dancer, being the sole representative of b-girls (female breakdancers) in the BBC Women in Sports campaign. As well as this, Shreya also delves into other sectors in the Arts through her work as Associate Director of Nupur Arts Dance Academy.
