Modern Films is thrilled to announce the release of the official trailer for Girls Will Be Girls (GWBG), the acclaimed feature film by Shuchi Talati that won two major awards at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. The film will be released in cinemas across the UK and Eire from 20 September, with the trailer now available for viewing online.
The trailer offers an evocative preview of this compelling mother-daughter coming-of-age drama, which has garnered widespread acclaim for its bold exploration of themes such as rebellion, sexual awakening, and the battle against societal shame. The film, which won both the Audience Award for World Cinema Dramatic and the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting at Sundance Film Festival, is a standout entry in a new wave of contemporary Indian cinema.
Girls Will Be Girls is set in a strict boarding school in the Himalayas, where 16-year-old Mira’s journey of self-discovery and romance is overshadowed by her mother’s unresolved issues and her own struggle to navigate societal constraints. The film is celebrated for its fresh, impactful storytelling and its nuanced portrayal of generational and cultural conflicts.
The trailer’s release marks an exciting moment as Girls Will Be Girls prepares to make its UK and Eire debut. It promises to captivate audiences with its striking visuals and deeply resonant narrative. Directed and written by Shuchi Talati, with production by Richa Chadha, Claire Chassagne, and Talati, the film features standout performances by Preeti Panigrahi, Kani Kusruti (also featured in Cannes Film Festival winner All We Imagine as Light), and Kesav Binoy Kiron.
Release supported by BFI National Lottery Audience Projects Fund and Aide aux Cinémas du Monde.
