The British Asian Rugby Association C.I.C. (BARA) held its inaugural British Asian Rugby Awards in the Palace of Westminster; honouring achievements of British South Asians in rugby, highlighting their contributions and driving positive change.
Dr Ikram Butt, BARA founder and the first British Asian to represent England in either code of rugby, stated: “The British Asian Rugby Awards are a landmark moment to recognise the success of South Asians who have inspired others, transformed perceptions, and impacted their communities.”
“BARA has always sought to use rugby as a medium for social change and cultural understanding, fostering community cohesion.
“At a time when society faces challenges like race riots and Islamophobia, sports can unite people, break down prejudices, and promote a sense of belonging.
“This milestone moment not only recognises the achievements of South Asians in rugby but also underscores the power of sport to unite communities and challenge societal divides.
“Hosting this event in Parliament demonstrates the importance of inclusivity and the growing acknowledgment of representation in sport.
“As BARA approaches its 20th anniversary next year, this inaugural awards evening lays the foundation for continued progress, ensuring South Asian representation thrives in rugby for generations to come.”
Stephanie Peacock, Minister for Sport, Media, Civil Society, and Youth, praised BARA’s efforts in her message of support: “Like all sport, rugby has the power to change lives and bring communities closer together. I’d like to pay tribute to all those honoured tonight and to the British Asian Rugby Association for their fantastic work promoting diversity and representation across both codes.”
Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House, commented: “It is a privilege to host the British Asian Rugby Awards in Speaker’s House.
“This event is a testament to the growing representation and success of British South Asians in rugby. Such an initiative celebrates athletic achievement and highlights the power of sport in fostering unity, respect, and diversity in our society. I commend BARA for their dedication to inclusivity in rugby and am honoured to support their efforts.”
