Fairbank United has made an extraordinary impact this Ramadan, rallying the community to raise over £20,000 in aid of humanitarian efforts in Gaza.

The funds, donated to the Halifax-based UC3 (Unique Children’s Charity), will provide much-needed relief to those facing hardship.

As a club deeply rooted in a Muslim-majority community, Fairbank United believes in the importance of charity, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

With unwavering determination, players, supporters, and local businesses united in an ambitious fundraising campaign, proving that football is more than just a game – it’s a force for good.

Football, Fasting, and Fundraising: The Ramadan Midnight League

One of the standout initiatives was the Ramadan Midnight League, an electrifying five-team tournament sponsored by Cha Cha Chai and backed by the West Riding County FA.

Held under the floodlights, games kicked off after Iftar and carried on past midnight, blending competition with camaraderie in a unique celebration of faith and sport.

Teams featured current and former Fairbank United players, each proudly sponsored by local businesses. Insane Air, captained by Fezan Akubat and driven by the dazzling performances of Player of the Tournament Khurram Shazad, emerged victorious after a nail-biting final against Cueclub.

Individual brilliance shone throughout the tournament, with Raziq Ali (VisionCare) and Mamadu Kante (Gamefight) sharing the Top Goalscorer title with seven goals apiece. Meanwhile, Yaser Butt (Shakehouse) put on a goalkeeping masterclass, earning him the title of Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

Remarkably, before a single ball was kicked, the tournament had already raised £4,500, thanks to the overwhelming generosity of local businesses.

Running for a Cause: The Ramadan 5K challenge

Beyond the football pitch, Fairbank United’s commitment extended to the streets and parks. A dedicated group of 29 players and supporters took on the grueling challenge of a daily 5K run, many doing so while fasting—a true testament to their resilience and passion for the cause.

Among them were Fezan Yacub, Shazad Bashir (Club Chairman), Mohammed Khan, Mohammed Hussain, Mohammed Hassan, and Mohammed Hussain, who gathered at Lister Park to push their limits and inspire others. Their determination resonated throughout the community, drawing in more donations and support.

Sweet Success: The charity cake sale finale

To cap off the fundraising drive, Fairbank United hosted a charity cake sale on the eve of Eid, bringing the community together for one last collective effort. Families, friends, and supporters came together, indulging in sweet treats while making generous contributions to the cause.

A message of gratitude

Reflecting on the success of the campaign, Club Chairman Shazad Bashir expressed heartfelt thanks: “This has been an incredible effort from everyone involved.

“People have been (literally) running around tirelessly, and without their dedication, none of this would have been possible. A special thank you to our volunteers who worked behind the scenes and to every person who donated, played, or supported in any way.”

The overwhelming support demonstrated the true spirit of Ramadan – compassion, generosity, and unity. The funds raised will provide essential aid to the people of Gaza, serving as a reminder that small acts of kindness, when united, can create powerful change.

Fairbank United extends its deepest gratitude to all who participated, donated, and stood in solidarity for this cause. This Ramadan, they didn’t just play football – they made a difference.
