A group of young people from across the Bradford district formed the ‘Bradford Young Ambassadors’ at the start of 2024, and volunteer with the aim of encouraging other young people into Bradford Museums and Galleries.

This year, they have delivered five workshops including how to make a dastarkhan (tablecloth) using natural dyes including turmeric, beetroot and charcoal.

At other workshop sessions, visitors made a vintage festive bookmark using marbling techniques, tested their poetry skills at the museum inspired poetry table. The finale event for this year had a Christmas focus with two drop-in sessions, showcasing some of the artistic skills from each of their previous workshops

Young Ambassador, Imamah said: “Being a Young Ambassador for Bradford Museums has been such an enjoyable experience!

“My favourite thing has been the amazing people I’ve got to know. Everyone is so friendly and there is so much opportunity to creatively work as a group and take charge of what we do with our time.

“Seeing the results and reflecting on the experience has been so rewarding, especially after all the teamwork and thought that goes into each meeting. To anyone considering doing this – go for it!

“Even if you aren’t sure about a career related to museums or history, the skills gained are invaluable and you get to interact with so many interesting people you may not get the opportunity to otherwise.”

Now, Bradford Museums and Galleries are looking for next year’s cohort of Young Ambassadors. Applications are open now for young people between the ages of 16 and 25, who love arts, heritage and culture and are keen to learn more.
