Gritting campaign continues as Manchester looks towards a wintry weekend: Gritter
A week of gritting is set to intensify over the weekend as the City Council works to keep our region’s roads clear.
With the cold weather set to continue into the weekend gritting crews are preparing for a busy weekend working around the clock, driving our fleet of gritters throughout Manchester.
Specialised quad bikes are also in use to keep cycle lanes de-iced, as well as teams of operatives working to keep priority footpaths clear, in particular in areas where footfall is heaviest. This will also include public squares throughout the city centre.
As well as the road network, work is ongoing to ensure that as many of the near 200 community grit bins have been refilled so that residents are able to salt their neighbourhoods if required.
Residents can find their nearest grit bin by following this link.
With nearly 4,000 tonnes of grit stockpiled, the Council also wants to reassure people that there is no risk of there being any shortage during this cold snap.
In spite of this, road conditions could still be treacherous across the city region and we’d urge people to cake care however their travel, be that walking, cycling or taking the car.
Councillor Tracey Rawlins, Executive Member for Clean Air, Environment and Transport, said: “Gritting is a vital task the staff in our Highways Department carry out and I’m grateful for their efforts in keeping our roads and pavements clear.
“We have crews working in shifts, 24 hours a day to ensure that stocks are kept replenished, and where grit has been washed away by melting snow, a fresh layer can be placed down.
“While we will do everything in our power to keep key routes open, the public should always take extra care when venturing out in hazardous conditions, and regularly check traffic updates should there be any disruption.”
